Puglia-Cerignola: from the saltworks of Margherita di Savoia to the Sanctuary of Madonna of Ripalta, Ofanto, a valley rich in biodiversity

Antica Enotria, the farm Contessa Staffa, are located in an area really interesting for a turist: both for the landscape and the offer. An area largely to be discovered and then be admired. Let's start by discovering the land near the sea where the Saltworks of Margherita di Savoia open to visitors: please visited the official web site http://www.margheritadisavoia.com

A landscape characterized by huge mountains of salt is not only an economic treasure, but also a natural oasis to many animals including the famous pink flamingos. In the past the Saltworks, called Barletta Saltworks as Margherita was in the suburbs of the town Barletta, were the most important in Europe and second in the world. These land are particularly fascinating as the salt captures light and reflects all shades of pink, thus creating a unforgettable picture.

Our Farm is very close to the town of Andria, Barletta and Trani faous for their history and the treasure of art they reveal to the visitor. A triangle of history among the most important in Italy. Moving up towards Cerignola we find the Ripalta Sanctuary well known for its Byzantine icon of Our Lady. Ripalta which is the unique original icon of Madonna and Child Enthroned existing in Puglia. Place not to be missed for its architecture and for the history it contains.

From our land, we could say, originate the middle part of the Ofanto Valley  famous for its biodiversity. "The Ofantina valley is one of the promised lands in southern Italy. Oh, if it was known to all Italians!" (Cosimo De Giorgi, geographer - 1880). Several are the animal and plant species which live here. The animals represent the most striking aspect and most spectacular of Ofanto Valley, very interesting for enthusiasts of nature photography. Among all we can mention the red heron and the gray heron, the white egret and the squacco. Among mammals, the existence of which is closely dependent on wetlands, stands the otter predator indicator of a significant biodiversity, but also other small predators such as skunks and foxes; together they are more than 60 species of natural interest that lie along the river an environment conducive to reproduction.

The Ofanto Valley is worth a trip not only for its biodiversity, but also for the scenery characterized by olive groves, vineyards, cultivated today with artichokes and peaches.
